Pcpunk suggested I give Linux a try and that I should post here to get some help setting it up. I've settled on the Mint Distro and pcpunk recommended version 17.3 'Rosa' Cinnamon (64bit). Here are the details on my HP: I'm posting this now at work on the West Coast so I won't be able to start the process until this evening. In terms of tech savvy I'm about a 4.5/10 (no experience coding or programming but I can navigate Windows with zero issues) so I appreciate any assistance that can keep things fairly laymen for the moment. Just make sure there are no files on the USB (that you want to keep) beforehand. And or, if you have a DVD-R or DVD-RW laying around you could use that. Like I said earlier the USB will be more fun to use, it is much faster, especially if it is of good quality. An 8GB will be fine, or even if you have a 4GB would work also. It's well worth it IMO to buy an 8GB to use for this.

Here is the download site for the Linux Mint iso file. Choose the Mirror closest to you, Under 'Download mirrors' Once the iso is downloaded we need/should check it to see if the download went well. If you are familiar with Download Managers, it would be a good idea to use one, especially if it has the option to Verify the download. If help is needed just say the word. To create a live USB in Windows, I suggest using UNetbootin: (download the Windows version) It's fairly self-explanatory to use, and you can use it to download the Mint ISO, or use a Mint ISO that you have already downloaded.
With all due respect to Our Moderator Al1000, I find 'Universal USB Installer' to be better and faster to Boot. It also supports the Download of '17.3' which is the latest of the 17 Series and the most refined. Unetbootin Only supports Downloading '17.2' and is a little slower to Boot for me. Here is the Download for Universal USB Installer if you want.
Just download it to a Folder in Downloads or where ever you want. Then you just Click on it to Start it, both of them are Standalone/Portable, so they don't even need installing. This can be done a few different ways, so when you get time tell us what info you need.
