The bay count of an NAS refers to how many disk drives it can store. Models, as well as single and dual drive, with options available for the dual drve up to 12 TB. NETGEAR is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux and Android operating.

I have owned a two-bay DS710+ for about 3 years. It's been a great NAS. But I'm considering two single bay DS114 units instead of upgrading to another double-bay like the DS713+.

One DS114 will be for primary usage. The other DS114 will backup the first unit (off-site).

I do not require support for Virtual machine storage. However, I do use iSCSI to store recorded TV shows from my Home Theater PC. I also use BitTorrent Sync to sync files from my PC to the NAS. QUESTION: If I downgrade to a single-bay DS114, will I still be able to stream videos stored on the NAS? Basically, I'm not sure where the video transcoding takes place, or in what circumstances I would benefit from staying with a double-bay unit. Any thoughts?

If you want to stream. Then get the one with the fastest processor or a play version designed for streaming. I would lean to the + versions as they have a better processor.

Single or double doesnt really matter. Obviously if you need 2 units, then it doesnt really matter which one. I would suggest the double bays, for just alittle more money you get the chance for expansion, and duplication verses being limited by the 1 bay. Just stick with 7200RPM drives as well.

The 5900/5400rpm drives will be an issue.
