The Clarett just stopped allowing any sound through it. First that went was the I/O. Then even the DAW to the software went.

Very strange. I'm returning it to B&H since it's within 30 days (had it up less than a week before breaking) Seeing how my Saffire Pro 24 DSP broke and made a noise within 2 months of getting it, this all is just too much of a coincidence for me to want to try a replacement Focusrite unit. I guess what I'm saying is you only have your own experience to rely on as there isn't a database showing how reliable gear is to know if your situation is just very bad luck and worth another try.

The only two companies I've had gear break on me was Universal Audio (2 units, UAD-1 and LA-610) and Focusrite. I've had several Yamaha, M-Audio, Behringer, PreSonus, etc, some gear still working fine back to the 80's and here Focusrite has one unit go in 2 months, the other in 1 week. I guess my only silver lining was it's within return period and warranty. My next try is: Audient ID22. I got an Audient iD22 and it has all hookups in the rear (which I'm not used to, kcprogguitar, lol) I WILL say, in comparison to the Clarett, 2 things become very clear: 1) No need for Thunderbolt.

Apogee and Audient work plenty fast over USB with no issues. 2) Latency on Apogee is pretty good, better than the Clarett (Clarett sounded like Rockabilly slapback on Input Monitoring, Apogee like very fast ADT) But the Audient I hear NO latency on Input Monitoring.

Which means it's less than 10ms. Again, on INPUT MONITORING! All three units are undetectable on Direct Monitoring as it should be. I Do have an iMac with SSD drive and 16GB so maybe that speeds things up with Input Monitoring to begin with. However, I didn't have the Clarett long enough to see if I needed to play with their own settings to get latency lower. POINT is, other units can get undetectable latency.

So if you DO consider the Clarett series, I don't see Thunderbolt or Latency as considerations. Consider other options (I/O, specs on noise, ranges, etc) BTW, the Audient had an interesting feature: 2 side-chain Sent/Returns which I read somewhere route with your signal before entering the preamp. There will never be any latency. I don't think the interface determines the amount of tracks you can run, realistically. You can easily record 10+ tracks w/USB 2.0 - how many tracks are you recording at one time? It sounds to me like you need to look at your computer - I can run 24+ 44.1/24-bit tracks on a DuoCore w/4G of RAM, and quite a few plugs w/no problem.

If you're mixing ITB, you're not really putting any pressure on the interface. I can't believe th bad luck you're having w/interfaces - I've used a CardD Deluxe and an MAudio 24/96 for over ten years and never had a lick of trouble.

The Scarlett 18i8 I got a year or so ago seems to be working flawlessly, too. I even had an Electrician come in and check my lines. I've counted amps and mades sure every strip was pulling 1/2 the juice it was rated for (most Tripp-Lite strips say 15A for example) So I'm confident it's not a surge issue from the lines in (and none of my other equipment have had problems, some dating back decades) So It is INDEED crazy bad luck. They say 'random' happens in clumps so I'm in a clump. So I'm back to square one trying to figure out what's next. Retry a unit (Clarett, iD22) or move on to another (i.e. Crimson, USBpre 2) What I like about the last 2 are no mix control software.

I hate levels interfacing what I'm trying to do in theory, but both those units I've tried have very intuitive mix software, so not a problem for me. The irony here is I found 8 receptacles on the same 20A breaker. Lucking I don't have a lot plugged in, but I'm close. When my brother comes in (Master Electrician) we will install a second line to truly keep the load to less than 1/2 the rating (. My brother said the same thing, Gasp100, 'could be your mac' but really, how can a USB mess up the I/O on a unit with it's own wall-wart? And why only ONE channel and not the other. (for the audient) The Saffire got it's problems on a PC.

The Clarett is also self-powered, but it did restart the mac when I did a 'Factory Reset' the first time and worked after that for a day before failing. The Apogee has worked on both PC and Mac and Macbook no problems. As does my other audio attached to the iMac (notably the interface I bought) But you are correct to NOT make assumptions. Can one test the voltage across Thunderbolt and USB? I've not ever done that.

To loudboy, there is something about resistance across more metal that I'm sure lowers the theoretical amp ratings of a 20A breaker, but my thinking is there may be a SURGE when turning on certain items like Monitors or Amps that temporarily pull more than their specs so one could theoretically go over for a brief period (I was told Washers, Refrigerators, Hair dryers can do this) But when I worked as an Electrician in the 80s I remember the rule of thumb was 4 outlets to a 20A breaker except the Kitchen which was 2 outlets per. Mostly because of expected usage. So if the Living Room and Hallway have a breaker and the WHOLE studio (former master bedroom) does, then I could be pulling 18A and my wife decides to plug in the foot bath or vacuum and POOF everything goes out. That's why I bought Tripp-Lite, so no surges in hurts components even on the same house line like a bad Refrigerator. The idea I think is to 'dummy proof' by only putting so few outlets you couldn't overpower the breaker if you tried with only a few plugs available. I use strips of 8 switches so I can pull more in theory.

I like the ability to turn things off entirely, and the switch lights look cool, lol. All labelled and some units don't have power switches (the Audient doesn't, the iSP Stealth doesn't, same with Mix8) and some units power from the rear or hidden side. I also have studio lights that are cool to turn on from a close switch whereas the lights themselves are behind the whole console and i'd risk knocking a monitor or speaker down getting at it.

I had NONE of these issue recording to an Akai DPS24. Man I miss that unit!

Hello maybe off topic but I´ve got the RME Babyface Pro (MBP pro) since a few days - a really nice Audiointerface.

Very low latency with guitar amp plug ins (RME is well known for that). It´s fully bus powered and with Totalmix FX it´s a joy to work with.

The best is it works with Mac, iOS and PC which Thunderbolt don´t. Thunderbolt is (unfortunately) Mac only. With the Audio Workstation (Win 8.1 pro - Cubase 7.5.4) I work with the RME UCX and there are no CPU load problems. I use lots of VSTi like BFD 3 or NI, FX plug ins (EQ, Comps and so on) and Guitaramp simulators.

Maybe with TB you can have a few tracks more but USB Interface is not USB Interface. RME comes with the overall Performance really close, so in my case there is no need for Thunderbolt. And if the Computer is not 'strong' enough, it does not matter if USB or Thunderbolt. I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had some problems with your Clarett and have indicated that you were going to return the unit. If you’ve decided against returning it and would like any assistance getting everything up and running, or if you’ve had any problems trying to return the unit please get in touch with us directly and we’ll do everything we can to assist you: To clarify, connecting a Clarett certainly should not force your Mac to shut down/crash (and we’ve not had any other reports of that occurring), nor should you need to use the ‘Restore Factory Defaults’ option in Focusrite Control in order to get going. Having read through this thread I thought it might be worth clearing up a few things about Thunderbolt in general versus other connections.

As mentioned in this thread, the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 1 is 10Gbps (the Clarett range are all Thunderbolt 1 devices) which is double the bandwidth of USB 3.0. This level of bandwidth is not ‘necessary’ for typical audio use - even when using every channel on our largest Thunderbolt interface (the Clarett 8PreX) at 192kHz/24-bit you will not get anywhere near this limit.

A major advantage of this is that bandwidth therefore does not need to be considered as carefully as it does when using USB 2.0/FireWire devices since it’s far more unlikely that you’ll ever reach that threshold, even with multiple Thunderbolt devices connected to the same bus. Though the Clarett range only have a single Thunderbolt port per device, they can still be ‘daisy chained’ by being placed last in the chain. We have tested with the Clarett last in a chain of up to six devices and found no problems at all - depending on the devices in use and how much bandwidth they are using, you may be able to connect more/fewer than this. This is simply not possible with USB 2.0 or 3.0, since daisy chaining is not a part of the specification for those protocols. While it’s possible to daisy chain FireWire devices, the bandwidth is far more restricted and you will likely encounter problems if you try to chain more than two devices together on the same bus (and you may encounter problems even with only two devices depending on how bandwidth-hungry those particular devices are).

The second major advantage of Thunderbolt for audio purposes is the lower levels of latency that are achievable using this protocol. Thunderbolt connects straight through to the PCIe layer, as opposed to USB which must go through a number of stages first (each stage adding additional latency). Latency of less than 10ms is typically inaudible to most people, though the lower the latency the better when recording as even lower latency than this can still put off some performers. Many USB and FireWire devices (including our Scarlett/Saffire ranges) get around this problem by introducing a direct monitoring feature to the setup, which allows the user to monitor the signal ‘pre-DAW’ (i.e. Directly through the hardware without any additional software processing). With the Clarett range, this is essentially not necessary in most scenarios (though it is a feature included on the Clarett range) since the round-trip latency (the time it takes for an signal to be converted to digital, be processed by the DAW and then be converted back to an analogue signal) is so low that it is undetectable.

This allows you to not have to spend additional time setting up mixes outside of your DAW for your performers, as well as allowing them to perform while hearing the effect of any plugins or processing inserted in the DAW. I'm a new Logic Pro X user and just want an interface that is simple and unobtrusive (don't we all). As daunting as Logic Pro can be, I don't want to obscure my production path with extraneous plug-ins. In fact, I could see myself becoming a plug-in junkie spending more time evaluating plug-ins and not getting any work done. This assertion diminishes the value of both Duet and Apollo. Beyond sheer simplicity, pre quality and AD/DA converters are the reason one would pay $500 US for what is essentially a two-simultaneous in interface.

Comparing the pre and converter quality between Duet, Apollo and Clarett is speculative at best. Apogee mentions their 32-bit ESS Sabre32 DAC, UA states only that they provide 'world-class 24-bit/192 kHz audio conversion' and Focusrite offers even less AD/DA converter information. It's all very vague, but my perception is that you're all close on both pre and AD/DA conversion quality. I can only can only hope that perception is accurate. This makes me think about elements of an interface that I would never use and how much of that accounts for production cost. The logic here is that more production dollars that are spent on interface elements I would never use means fewer dollars spent on pres and AD/DA converters. I would never use the Clarett's midi in or out nor the optical connection; this makes me wonder if less was spent on pres and converters in an effort to hit a retail price point.?

Thunderbolt is not really necessary at this level and I wonder about the production cost of that as well (when compared to what Apogees saves with their completely cheap-ass USB 2). Focusrite has been very Pro Tools aligned so I really wonder about Clarett/Logic Pro X support/internal knowledge. The hope here is that no support is needed! Ultimately, that 'no support required' production scenario is huge to all of us. The redesign of your control software has been reviewed to great acclaim; that seems like a major step in the right direction. We don't know what the problem was. I had a bad OWC Thunderbolt Dock. Could have been that causing issues.

When I removed it from the whole chain, my 2nd Monitor stopped winking off and on. My iMac stopped doing white screens after reboots. I wouldn't hold back on getting a Clarett on account of my issues, since we don't know enough about where the problem came from. This experience DID afford me the chance to try out a bunch of interfaces.

My takes on them. I had RME Babyface, Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP, Clarett 2Pre, Apogee Duet II, Apogee One, Audient ID22, Apollo Twin.

Originally PreSonus FirePod, all others beat the Firepods's preamps quite noticeably. 1) All had pretty good low noise, decent amp gain, no real latency in recording to speak of for Direct monitoring or laying tracks to Logic Pro X on iMac. 2) The ones that had best Input Monitoring Latency were: Audient, Apollo Twin. You could track with the minimal Input Monitoring of these units. There was noticeable latency on the others through the DAW. From ADT to Slack Back Echo latency. 3) There was ZERO relationship on latency between USB, Firewire & Thunderbolt.

The Clarett and Apollo were Thunderbolt, Saffire, all others USB 2.0 I wouldn't choose an interface based on these things thinking you'll get some amazing throughput from one over others. 4) The Apogee One was the most seamless. No interfering software to get it to work. Only problem with the Apogee's were their I/O were flimsy plugins. Not for sturdy long term use. The Apogee One even popped it's case in the middle like it was falling apart. The Clarett, Audient and Apollo were very hardy metal, well done.

5) The best Mix Control Software were from the Clarett, Audient and Apollo. The Apogee One had one but you don't need it. The Duet did, the Saffire was not fun, the RME was yuck. Bottom line, newest products have the best mix control software for easy use. 6) I too thought 'no plugins' for the Apollo Twin. Well, no more.

The UAD plugins are similar to the hardware (I have one so I can compare and it's so close it's hard to tell the difference) They are expensive and yet if you get them during sales, worth every penny. Can't say that enough. If I chose the Clarett 2Pre, knowing what I know now, I'd still get a Satellite QUAD and UAD plugins for my mix. Summary, for the price, ease of software use, great Pre's, etc, the Clarett and Audient stick out as great buys (the Audient is $100 more) I did have an issue with my Kemper and the Audient on the Optical, but not with the Clarett.

I'm quite happy with the Apollo in the end and glad things turned out the way they did. But I thought the Clarett was total quality. It is a very excellent update from the Saffire in every way. Matthew, the fact that you responded to this thread speaks volumes.

For the Clarett range, the price point is definitely not a reflection of the quality of the microphone preamps and conversion quality. The feedback we have received regarding these aspects have been great so far and I have personally replaced my previous Saffire interface with the Clarett 8Pre. Although hard to say how the Clarett microphone preamps will sound for you when recording, here is a link showing a song recorded through a Clarett interface, which includes additional stems for further analysis: In regards to Logic Pro X connectivity, the Clarett range would absolutely work with this DAW and would only require the interface to be selected as the input/output device within the software's audio preferences. Before connecting the interface, it would require the installation of the routing software (Focusrite Control), but this serves as the control software for the interface (audio routing, engaging AIR on the inputs, etc.) and doesn't need to be opened to use the interface after initially setting it to your preferences.
